Answers about installing the counter

How do I install the counter

Installation of the counter is very simple. First you must decide which version of the counter of you will use - the full JavaScript or the 'Lite' version (click here to see the difference). Then find the HTML code you need in your welcome e-mail. Then all you have to do is copy it into your HTML code. Warning! if you are using an WYSIWYG page maker you have to go into the HTML view otherwise you will just see the code on your page.

My counter won't work properly

One reason why your counter might not be working is that some applications paste everything into one line. Because of the way browsers read the code as soon as it gets to a comment it ignores the rest of the line. So double check your HTML code and try to put one blank line between every line of our code.

Another problem could be that you didn't copy all of the code onto your page. So also double check that all of the code is there.  If you still have difficulty and don't see you answers for the software you're using, please send an e-mail to support@freecounts.com with your ID number and the name of the software you are using and we'll do our best to help.

How do I install using Netscape Composer?

It should be this simple - open your original welcome e-mail from FreeCounts that had the code in it. Copy this code. Go to the Netscape Composer, go to exactly where you want the counter to appear, Click Insert on the menu bar, then click HTML Tag...

Now, a new window should have opened. You can type the code here (or press Ctrl-V to paste the copied code). When you're done, click OK. Save and publish like you normally do, and you should be all set. If the regular code doesn't seem to be working for you, try same instructions with our 'Lite' version (the code is near the end of your welcome e-mail).

Answers about our statistics

What is meant by a tracker?

This is a term we made up. This is a code YOU use to "track" how people found your site. For example, if I was going to put a link to your page on MY web site, you might tell me to link to http://www.yoursite.com/index.htm?SPECIALCODE where "SPECIALCODE" is something different for every link. You can use this if you send out e-mails, buy online advertising, anytime you use a "clickable" link, this is something you can use to tell how people found your site.

What is the host address?

This is the "Internet address" of your visitor. If we can't determine the textual version, we list the numeric version. Some people find this useful to see that many of their visitors are AOL users, or Web TV users, or whatever it turns out to be. You can tell because the end of the "address" ends with "aol.com" or "webtv.net" or "att.net" (AT&T), etc. Some people find it interesting to see the various government branches visiting their site. This gives you a generality of where the visitor came from, but otherwise serves no real purpose to you.

Who is the referrer?

This is the site they came from to get to your site. If they found your site listed on Yahoo!, you'd see the address of the exact page they were looking at. This usually does not work with e-mail, so for e-mail advertising we definitely suggest using "Trackers".

General answers about our service

I'm getting an error message dealing with the banner

Most of the free homepage sites put an advertising banner at the top of your page. If you have installed the full JavaScript version of our counter, there could be an error. If this happens you should install the 'Lite' version of our counter. The code is located at the bottom of your welcome e-mail.

How do I center my counter?

This can be accomplished quite easily. Simply put the code <P><CENTER> before any of our code, and then put </CENTER></P> after all of our code and you'll be all set. This should work with any browser unlike some other solutions.

What is the difference between the standard and lite versions?

They both keep an accurate count of how many people have been to your site. However, the full JavaScript version will also track where people came to your site FROM (links on other sites, search engines, etc.). The full version will also log the visitors screen size, and is slightly more accurate about the browser versions. Otherwise, the 'Lite' version is the same.
